The heart of the city, Puerta del Sol; Plaza Mayor, the large square; Plaza de Oriente, the area where the Royal Palace addressed the public; the Alcalá Gate, built as an entrance to show how wealthy the city is; Gran Vía, with its gallery-lined roofs; Plaza Colón; Cibeles Square and Fountain; and the Cervantes Monument are among the places to be seen. Toledo is a true open-air museum and one of the most important cities on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, as well as the former capital of Spain. The country’s most magnificent cathedral houses works by world-famous painters, making it competitive with some of the world’s most renowned museums. Known as the city of El Greco, Toledo has managed to remain unchanged since the 16th century. Buildings bearing traces of Roman, Visigothic, Arab, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture, narrow streets, El Greco’s paintings, traditional pastry shops, Damascene stores, and of course its famous cathedral make it a place of great tourist interest. Another tradition in Toledo is the production of almond paste, dating back to the time when the Arabs conquered the city. A visit to Toledo would not be complete without tasting this mouth-watering sweet. After our walk through the Jewish Quarter, we meet in Madrid and continue on our way to Cordoba. During our city tour along the Guadalquivir River, we will first see Maria Luisa Park, which includes Plaza de España, Plaza América, the Seville Cathedral (exterior), the third-largest cathedral in the world and also the burial place of Christopher Columbus, and right next to the cathedral, the Giralda Minaret, the only remaining part of the mosque on which the cathedral was built, bearing the memory of the Andalusian Umayyad State. The Alcázar, the palace of the Castilian kings, will also be among the places seen (exterior). Then, passing through the Archives of the Indies, where records of all sea voyages made to the Americas from the Age of Discovery until the 19th century were kept, we will reach the narrow old streets of the Santa Cruz district, known as “old” Seville.
